Villarreal 1-1 Real Madrid

Real Madrid were only able to take one point from the match against Villarreal, during which referee Paradas Romero sent off Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho, fitness trainer Rui Faria and players Sergio Ramos and Mesut Ozil. The Whites took the lead with an amazing goal from Cristiano Ronaldo and conceded an equaliser in the final minutes of the encounter in a set piece that followed a dubious foul. Real Madrid are nevertheless leaders in La Liga with a six point lead.

Arbeloa played as right back and Lass in the centre of defence, leaving Kaka off the starting lineup. Villarreal pressurised at the start looking to net the opener, which was nonetheless nearly scored by Pepe from a header cleared by Zapata on the goal-line (9'). Nilmar had the clearest chance for the locals nine minutes later and forced Casillas to save the day with a stretch.

Real weren't dominating the encounter but created danger from set pieces and Pepe nearly netted a header on the 34-minute mark. Mourinho replaced Lass with Callejon in the 28th minute because he had a booking. Benzema took a shot with hardly an angle just before half-time and hit the outside of the net (42').

Altintop came on for Callejon in the second half due to the latter's injury following a late challenge by Bruno that the referee failed to see. Real Madrid started to dominate the encounter and looked for a goal, while the referee seemed more focused on their coaching area and eventually sent off fitness trainer Rui Faria (49'). Khedira missed the goal with a shot from outside the box in the 53rd minute that was followed by a Xabi Alonso free-kick that grazed the crossbar.

The Whites tallied their strike a few minutes later when Cristiano Ronaldo dribbled past goalkeeper Diego Lopez inside the box after receiving a spectacular heel pass from Ozil (61'). Villarreal suffered a blow and hardly entered Casillas' goal, and Khedira had a chance to seal the match with a shot that was cleared by Bruno between the posts (63').

Higuain came on for Benzema in the 76th minute and Villarreal looked for a goal of their own spurred by their fans. Altintop made a dubious foul outside Madrid's box on the 83-minute mark and the referee called it following his linesman's advice, even though he was just two meters away from the effort. Senna netted the equaliser from the ensuing free-kick and the referee, who always kept an eye on Real Madrid's bench area, then sent off Jose Mourinho.

Sergio Ramos saw a second yellow card in the 84th minute and Ozil was also sent off because, according to the referee in his report, he "scoffed the previous decision by applauding." Real madrid were down to nine men and didn't have time to react. Referee Paradas Romero was the unfortunate star of the encounter and made the players livid with his behaviour.

This match is over now and the Whites are still leaders with a six point cushion; they must now start preparing for Saturday's clash with Real Sociedad at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

"Carroll leads Whites to a victory that puts them back at the top of the league table"

Real Madrid top the Endesa League table once more thanks to their victory today against CAI Zaragoza, who raised strong opposition through Hettsheimeir, Wright and Cabezas. Carroll gave a stellar performance, banking 36 points.
Wright scored several points in the opening minutes for the visitors and Cabezas proved an effective and dangerous playmaker. Begic and Singler scored Real Madrid's first points, while Carroll stepped up his game with a three-pointer and a 2+1 that sealed a 7-0 run for the locals. CAI drew the score 19-19 by the end of the first period with a solid game and strong numbers from the free-throw line.

Rodriguez scored a three-pointer in the second act, starting a pour continued by Mirotic and Reyes. Just when it seemed Madrid would dominate the rest of the game, the visitors woke up and came close on the scoreboard again until Mirotic and Begic put an end to their comeback (44-32).

Wright, Hettsheimeir and Aguilar did their best to thwart the locals' efforts to sentence the game after half-time with a solid game in both defence and offence. Carroll pulled rank yet again and helped the team recover a solid lead by the end of the period.

The American shooting guard gave a spectacular performance in the final quarter, netting one basket after another and leading the team in earning a solid win that kept the crowd on its feet in the final minutes of the encounter.

Anzhi hoping to sign world's best

March 14, 2012
Roberto Carlos

Anzhi have already taken big strides forward as a club, with the likes of Samuel Eto'o, Yuri Zhirkov and Christopher Samba all having moved to Russia, and Guus Hiddink has now taken charge of the club.
Carlos, who acts as an assistant to the president Suleiman Kerimov in addition to his playing duties, has revealed the club are now setting their sights a little higher.
"Today, Messi is the best player in the world," he told Radio Marca. "He continues to show that. Cristiano is the key star for Real Madrid.
"I have no preference for either, but certainly Anzhi will try to sign both when their contracts expire."
Hiddink, meanwhile, has confirmed Anzhi intend to make further additions to the squad this year.
"I think we'll explore some possibilities on the market in the summer, but that is not to say I am unhappy with the players I have," Hiddink said.

Talking point: Who will go all the way?

Now that the eight remaining teams know their route to the UEFA Champions League final, tell us who you think will be celebrating on 19 May at the Fußball Arena München.
Talking point: Who will go all the way?
Following the draw for the remainder of the 2011/12 UEFA Champions League, FC Bayern München know the path that lies ahead of them if they are to reach the final on home soil.
Their reward for overwhelming FC Basel 1893 in the round of 16 is a tie against Olympique de Marseille, who are at this juncture of the competition for the first time since going all the way in 1993. OM have faced Bundesliga opposition already this season and have fond memories – they won both group games against Borussia Dortmund, during the second of which, on matchday six, they overturned a 2-1 deficit with five minutes left to progress.
The victors of that tie will encounter surprise package APOEL FC or nine-time champions Real Madrid CF. The first Cypriot side to qualify for the knockout phase, APOEL have managed just seven goals in eight games from the group stage onwards; by contrast, José Mourinho's men have scored 24.
Holders FC Barcelona are striving to become the first team since AC Milan to successfully defend the European title and they face the Rossoneri in a tie sure to evoke memories of the 1994 showpiece, which the Italian side won 4-0. Fans who are too young to remember that contest may recall their group meetings this term instead, the Azulgrana triumphing 3-2 at San Siro after a 2-2 draw in Spain.
Whoever emerges from that heavyweight tussle will pose a formidable test for SL Benfica or Chelsea FC. In the last eight for the seventh time in nine campaigns, the Blues can call on the knowledge of former Benfica duo Ramires and David Luiz, whose insight is sure to be valuable for interim manager Roberto Di Matteo.
With the draw complete, who do you think will be lifting the trophy on 19 May at the Fußball Arena München? Whose chances have increased or taken a hit today?
