Villarreal 1-1 Real Madrid

Real Madrid were only able to take one point from the match against Villarreal, during which referee Paradas Romero sent off Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho, fitness trainer Rui Faria and players Sergio Ramos and Mesut Ozil. The Whites took the lead with an amazing goal from Cristiano Ronaldo and conceded an equaliser in the final minutes of the encounter in a set piece that followed a dubious foul. Real Madrid are nevertheless leaders in La Liga with a six point lead.

Arbeloa played as right back and Lass in the centre of defence, leaving Kaka off the starting lineup. Villarreal pressurised at the start looking to net the opener, which was nonetheless nearly scored by Pepe from a header cleared by Zapata on the goal-line (9'). Nilmar had the clearest chance for the locals nine minutes later and forced Casillas to save the day with a stretch.

Real weren't dominating the encounter but created danger from set pieces and Pepe nearly netted a header on the 34-minute mark. Mourinho replaced Lass with Callejon in the 28th minute because he had a booking. Benzema took a shot with hardly an angle just before half-time and hit the outside of the net (42').

Altintop came on for Callejon in the second half due to the latter's injury following a late challenge by Bruno that the referee failed to see. Real Madrid started to dominate the encounter and looked for a goal, while the referee seemed more focused on their coaching area and eventually sent off fitness trainer Rui Faria (49'). Khedira missed the goal with a shot from outside the box in the 53rd minute that was followed by a Xabi Alonso free-kick that grazed the crossbar.

The Whites tallied their strike a few minutes later when Cristiano Ronaldo dribbled past goalkeeper Diego Lopez inside the box after receiving a spectacular heel pass from Ozil (61'). Villarreal suffered a blow and hardly entered Casillas' goal, and Khedira had a chance to seal the match with a shot that was cleared by Bruno between the posts (63').

Higuain came on for Benzema in the 76th minute and Villarreal looked for a goal of their own spurred by their fans. Altintop made a dubious foul outside Madrid's box on the 83-minute mark and the referee called it following his linesman's advice, even though he was just two meters away from the effort. Senna netted the equaliser from the ensuing free-kick and the referee, who always kept an eye on Real Madrid's bench area, then sent off Jose Mourinho.

Sergio Ramos saw a second yellow card in the 84th minute and Ozil was also sent off because, according to the referee in his report, he "scoffed the previous decision by applauding." Real madrid were down to nine men and didn't have time to react. Referee Paradas Romero was the unfortunate star of the encounter and made the players livid with his behaviour.

This match is over now and the Whites are still leaders with a six point cushion; they must now start preparing for Saturday's clash with Real Sociedad at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

"Carroll leads Whites to a victory that puts them back at the top of the league table"

Real Madrid top the Endesa League table once more thanks to their victory today against CAI Zaragoza, who raised strong opposition through Hettsheimeir, Wright and Cabezas. Carroll gave a stellar performance, banking 36 points.
Wright scored several points in the opening minutes for the visitors and Cabezas proved an effective and dangerous playmaker. Begic and Singler scored Real Madrid's first points, while Carroll stepped up his game with a three-pointer and a 2+1 that sealed a 7-0 run for the locals. CAI drew the score 19-19 by the end of the first period with a solid game and strong numbers from the free-throw line.

Rodriguez scored a three-pointer in the second act, starting a pour continued by Mirotic and Reyes. Just when it seemed Madrid would dominate the rest of the game, the visitors woke up and came close on the scoreboard again until Mirotic and Begic put an end to their comeback (44-32).

Wright, Hettsheimeir and Aguilar did their best to thwart the locals' efforts to sentence the game after half-time with a solid game in both defence and offence. Carroll pulled rank yet again and helped the team recover a solid lead by the end of the period.

The American shooting guard gave a spectacular performance in the final quarter, netting one basket after another and leading the team in earning a solid win that kept the crowd on its feet in the final minutes of the encounter.

Anzhi hoping to sign world's best

March 14, 2012
Roberto Carlos

Anzhi have already taken big strides forward as a club, with the likes of Samuel Eto'o, Yuri Zhirkov and Christopher Samba all having moved to Russia, and Guus Hiddink has now taken charge of the club.
Carlos, who acts as an assistant to the president Suleiman Kerimov in addition to his playing duties, has revealed the club are now setting their sights a little higher.
"Today, Messi is the best player in the world," he told Radio Marca. "He continues to show that. Cristiano is the key star for Real Madrid.
"I have no preference for either, but certainly Anzhi will try to sign both when their contracts expire."
Hiddink, meanwhile, has confirmed Anzhi intend to make further additions to the squad this year.
"I think we'll explore some possibilities on the market in the summer, but that is not to say I am unhappy with the players I have," Hiddink said.

Talking point: Who will go all the way?

Now that the eight remaining teams know their route to the UEFA Champions League final, tell us who you think will be celebrating on 19 May at the Fußball Arena München.
Talking point: Who will go all the way?
Following the draw for the remainder of the 2011/12 UEFA Champions League, FC Bayern München know the path that lies ahead of them if they are to reach the final on home soil.
Their reward for overwhelming FC Basel 1893 in the round of 16 is a tie against Olympique de Marseille, who are at this juncture of the competition for the first time since going all the way in 1993. OM have faced Bundesliga opposition already this season and have fond memories – they won both group games against Borussia Dortmund, during the second of which, on matchday six, they overturned a 2-1 deficit with five minutes left to progress.
The victors of that tie will encounter surprise package APOEL FC or nine-time champions Real Madrid CF. The first Cypriot side to qualify for the knockout phase, APOEL have managed just seven goals in eight games from the group stage onwards; by contrast, José Mourinho's men have scored 24.
Holders FC Barcelona are striving to become the first team since AC Milan to successfully defend the European title and they face the Rossoneri in a tie sure to evoke memories of the 1994 showpiece, which the Italian side won 4-0. Fans who are too young to remember that contest may recall their group meetings this term instead, the Azulgrana triumphing 3-2 at San Siro after a 2-2 draw in Spain.
Whoever emerges from that heavyweight tussle will pose a formidable test for SL Benfica or Chelsea FC. In the last eight for the seventh time in nine campaigns, the Blues can call on the knowledge of former Benfica duo Ramires and David Luiz, whose insight is sure to be valuable for interim manager Roberto Di Matteo.
With the draw complete, who do you think will be lifting the trophy on 19 May at the Fußball Arena München? Whose chances have increased or taken a hit today?

Ronnie Moore replaces Les Parry as Tranmere manager for rest of season

Ronnie Moore
Ronnie Moore has returned as Tranmere manager until the end of the season following Les Parry's departure earlier on Sunday.
Parry presided over a winless run of 11 matches prior to his removal as manager and the club currently sit just a point above the League Onerelegation zone.
Moore, a former Rovers player, managed the club between 2006 and 2009 before getting the sack and resurfacing at Rotherham, another club he served with distinction as a player.
He will take charge of Parry's backroom team of the assistant manager Kevin Summerfield and first-team coach John McMahon until the end of the campaign.
"Parting company with Les was a very difficult decision to make but we have had to act in the best interests of the club," said the chairman Peter Johnson.
"I'd like to thank Les for excellent service to the club over many years. I am delighted to be able to bring a manager with the experience of Ronnie back to the club until the end of the season."
Moore added: "It's great to be back, I can't wait to get started. It's nice to have the opportunity to keep the club in League One. I'm looking forward to being back at Prenton Park this week, meeting the players and hopefully starting things off with three points against Notts County on Tuesday night."

Goal-line technology in football moved a step closer this weekend after two systems were moved through to the second stage of Fifa testing.

goal-line technology in football

Goalref and Hawkeye will now undergo another series of examinations between March and June following the International Football Association Board’s decision to approve the second phase of examinations, with a decision over the final approval of the technology set for 2 June.
“It’s an important step forwards for us, but it’s equally important that we implement it properly,” said Football Association chief executive Alex Horne. “It must be accurate or it’s not worth having, but we’re very comfortable that the technology is proving itself.
“We absolutely expect that, provided the companies fulfill the criteria, we will be passing the use of the systems into the laws on 2 July in Kiev.”
Nine technology providers had their goal-line systems rigorously tested by Fifa in the latter stages of 2011, with Goalref and Hawkeye the only two companies to pass the initial examinations.
Meanwhile, Fifa has agreed to withdraw the proposed amendment to the law relating to a fourth substitution being used during extra time – but the proposal regarding fouls and misconduct, the so-called ‘triple punishment’, will be reviewed further.

League cup can be catalyst for Liverpool

Kenny Dalglish
For clubs with aspirations to compete at the upper end of the Premier League, the league cup has, in recent years, been a curious mix of opportunity and distraction. General convention dictates that they pick teams heavy on youth, a policy that arguably reached its apogee when an Arsenal side with an average outfield age of 20 demolished Liverpool 6-3 in 2007. (Though even then Julio Baptista, a not-particularly coltish 25 at the time, scored four of the Gunners' goals.) While ostensibly a chance to give youth its head, the none-too-subtle implication is that the league cup revolves around learning rather than winning; the big boys are busy with the big business elsewhere.
In some ways the league cup has always been a little lacking in identity. Conceived in the 1960s after the advent of widespread floodlighting made a midweek evening tournament both viable and desirable, it was only after the introduction of an automatic European spot for the winners that all 92 clubs began to compete. Since then, a rotating cast of sponsors -- currently Carling, though previous incarnations have included the Rumbelows Cup, the Coca-Cola Cup and, most endearingly, the Milk Cup -- and big-team ambiguity have contrived to muddy things somewhat. It will never be able to reach back into and resonate with football's (pre-)history the way the FA Cup can. And nowadays it will never compete with the league in any big club's list of priorities, a fact that is only exacerbated by the increasing disdain with which the these same clubs treat the Europa League. Never was a carrot so disdained.
Until the semifinals, of course, when everything changes. For a start, it's at this stage that big clubs start to run into one another, and night games between the Premier League's weightier ones are still rare enough to feel a bit special. More importantly, the possibility of an actual big silver cup swims, temptingly, into focus, and a scheduling nuisance makes a butterfly-like transformation into an opportunity to get your hands on something tangible. If there's one thing self-regarding aristocrats love, it's storied silver. Even Arsene Wenger -- who once dismissed the league cup as a "non-trophy" -- appears to have come around to the competition, an epiphany that only added to the black hilarity of last season's Laurent and Wojciech Show.
For Liverpool, therefore, this weekend offers a chance to make an immediate return on what Fenway Sports Group executives are doubtless calling "The Project." It is faintly remarkable that since the new Wembley opened for business in March 2007, 60 clubs have played in the shadow of the arch, but not a one has been Liverpool; this is a club whose fans used to refer to the old Twin Towers as "Anfield South." Kenny Dalglish will also be looking to right a personal wrong: As a player, he won four in a row from 1980-81 to 1983-84, but he has never lifted the cup as manager.
[+] EnlargeCraig Bellamy
Andrew Powell/Getty ImagesIn an interesting side story, Welshman Craig Bellamy -- who grew up in Cardiff supporting Liverpool -- could face his home team for the first time.
Dalglish's side has been effective if not always ebullient in both cups this season, which has been some compensation for league performances that have either been stable or stagnant depending on how generous you're feeling. Liverpool -- for all that last season was an exercise in self-harm followed by self-reclamation -- is only four points better off this term, having spent (as you may have heard) a fair amount of cash. Its inconsistency is neatly illustrated by the league cup semifinals: a smash-and-grab away win and an entertaining home draw against the best team in the country, Manchester City, between which Liverpool suffered in the league with an ambitionless, goalless draw with Stoke and a desperate surrender at Bolton.
However, Liverpool comes into the final high off the back of a 6-1 home win in the Other Cup, and while it wasn't exactly a proper thrashing -- more an exercise in trying to keep a straight face while Brighton & Hove Albion riotously thrashed themselves -- beyond the farce and the three own goals were glimpses of menace from Luis Suarez, something that looked like improvement from Andy Carroll and even at one point a smile from Stewart Downing.
An entertaining subplot for the Carling Cup final comes via the fit-again Craig Bellamy, who grew up in Cardiff supporting Liverpool; if he plays, he'll be facing his home team for the first time. And were Liverpool to emerge from what we might delicately call an interesting season -- insert your indelicate alternative term here -- with a trophy, the good folks of FSG would certainly feel that their investment was on track. Presumably the fans would be quite pleased, too.
One interesting and occasionally overlooked side effect of the league cup is that by virtue of its midseason position in the schedule and frequent openness of play, it offers a handy opportunity to get a new team winning. Jose Mourinho lifted the cup partway through his first year at Chelsea, and credited the experience with introducing what was then a relatively callow squad to the ways of triumph. If the cliches are true -- if winning is a habit, if success does breed success and if a bird in the hand really is worth two in the bush -- then a victory in the league cup can be seen as, and used as, a catalyst. Certainly, Dalglish views reaching the final as a sign that "there is progress being made. For the players it is an indication of how well they have done so everyone is looking forward to it."
In contrast to Liverpool, its opponent, Cardiff City, has visited the FA's monument to its own magnificence on three occasions. An FA Cup semifinal win against Barnsley was followed by defeat to 'Arry 'Edknapp's 'Ortsmouth in the 2008 final, and in 2010 it lost to Blackpool in a crazy Championship playoff final, going down 3-2 having led twice.
It's been less than two years since that loss, but Cardiff City is a very different proposition. Five of the players that started that game have gone -- including Joe Ledley, Michael Chopra and England's Jay Bothroyd -- and so, too, has the defeated manager Dave Jones, who has been replaced by former Watford boss Malky Mackay, a young, modern coach with a Revie-esque predilection for a dossier.
Mackay has been entrusted with reshaping the club -- another Project; they're everywhere these days -- and on the pitch this has meant tactically flexible, hard-pressing football. Kenny Miller provides the edge up front, but the creative heart of the team is Peter Whittingham, who quarterbacks between defense and midfield. Mackay himself has been rewarded for his progress to the final -- and the team's current fifth-place spot in the Championship -- with a new contract.
History, a notoriously inconstant muse, has encouragement for both teams. Liverpool -- already a strong favorite -- is the most successful club in the history of the competition, having lifted the trophy seven times, and the last time the sides met was in the fourth round of this competition, a 2-1 home win at Anfield.
[+] EnlargeKenny Miller
Scott Heavey/Getty ImagesKenny Miller & Co. will be underdogs against Liverpool, but remember this: Cardiff City holds the head-to-head advantage over the Reds.
Yet Cardiff City can take heart as well. It remains the only side ever to smuggle one of England's cups outside her borders, when Welsh legend Fred Keenorcaptained his side to victory in the 1927 FA Cup, beating Arsenal 1-0 in the final. (It was a goalkeeping error. Did you have to ask?) But more enticingly, Cardiff City holds the head-to-head advantage over its multi-trophied opponents. Of the 29 matches contested between the two, the Welsh side has won 18, lost nine and drawn two. That's right, folks: Cardiff City is a bogey team.
For the vast majority of the league that doesn't have the luxury of those fat revenue streams that beget seats at (or near) the top table, a cup's a cup. And the league cup has a proud tradition of shocks, from third division QPR's 3-2 win over West Bromwich Albion in 1967; through Oxford United upending QPR in 1986; to Sheffield Wednesday's 1-0 win over Manchester United in 1991, the last time a second division team won a major prize. Big shiny silver pots with lids that fit imperfectly onto grinning, champagne-soaked heads are the point of the whole business, after all, and while Liverpool is a heavy favorite with the bookies, Cardiff City has everything in place to frustrate them.
A prediction, in the safe and certain knowledge that it will be dramatically inaccurate: Liverpool 1-0 Cardiff City.
